Ranah Minang- Bukit Tinggi, Indonesia Part 1

#1. The Unique Minangkabau roof at sunrise

We planned this trip a few months ago to save as much as possible in terms of fare, accommodation and transport but without missing the fun. We had a similar experience before in 2005 visiting Solo-Jogja.

#2. A magnificient view on a paddy field from a resting area at a cliff

The four of us, Dith, Boogey, Boogey's wife Salina and I, went for a 5 days 4 nights trip to Bukit Tinggi, Sumatera Barat, a hill town, 2 hrs up north of Padang . Arriving at Padang airport at about 9 am local time, we immediately headed for Bukit Tinggi. Midway we stopped at Padang Panjang to delight our palates with gastronomic Minang dishes. Over here, we visited the Rumah Gadang, a minang house converted into a museum and also attentively heard a short lecture on the Adat Pepatih and Adat Temenggong and their differences. The lady who spoke was very eloquent and she defended the matriarchal ways of adat Pepatih by highlighting various poignant points. I reserved my opinions though.

#3. A young weaver at Pandai Sikek

#3. Rumah Gadang or Big house

#5. A morning stroll with Jam Gadang at the top of the hill

#6. Obeserving the sunrise with Mount Merapi in view

#7. E en our so called driver who graduated in IT and movie making, youngest son of our Hotel owner

#8. A small hut in the middle of a paddy field

After a rather arduous journey, we arrived at the cool and quaint old town of Bukit Tinggi . After settling/a short nap in the hotel, we toured the town on foot. At the town centre was the jam gadang or huge town clock which was leaning. Opposite was Bung Hatta’s palace with his statue and bust erected in front. Down the road was Fort de Kock. From the town centre, one could view a beautiful panorama that stretches from the majestic Gunung Merapi down south to Gunung Singgalang in the west. North was the Ngarai Sianok, a fairly huge canyon with a river meandering the deep valley below. At the edge of the hill, the canyon offered such a breathtaking scene. In the hills at the edge that faces the canyon was a catacomb of tunnels built by the Japanese during their occupation. It ran 6 km in total length and had secret exits that open into the canyon.

#9. A statue at Fort de Kock

#10. Ngarai Sianok with Mount Singalang standing tall

#11. Masjid Bingkudu, Canduang, Agam

#12. Inside Masjid Bingkudu, waiting for the Friday Prayers

Alhamdulillah we managed to perform Friday prayers in the oldest Mosque in Indonesia, more than 2 centuries old. Masjid Bingkudu, Canduang, Agam, made from solid wood with roofs of Ijok leaves, still stand strong and exude a majestic charm of the olden days. 2 years ago, we also had the opportunity to pray in the second oldest mosque in Indonesia i.e. Masjid Sultan Mataram, Kota Gede, jogja. Insyallah maybe next time we will pray in the third oldest Mosque of Indonesia.

Spiders, cyclers and surfers

The last 3 weekends were filled with our routine Sunday climb at Bukit Pelindong, kite surfing regatta at Balok Beach, Le Tour De Langkawi, spider hunting and Chinese New Year.

We were in Kl during Chinese New Year. We were at Boogey'e birthday party, meet with Roza's sister who stayed in Beijing and on vacation with her family, a short trip to Bukit Belachan accompanying my sister in law for her video project field shooting and ....

Thanks dan sememangnya kita perlu bersyukur dapat menikmati keindahan ciptaanNya. kamera saya DSLR asas saja. Nikon D50.

lelayang
terima kasih.

Spiders of Kuantan Part II

View all 6 photos...
I am still into spiders as my spider photo stock is still abundant. My focus is still on spiders and insects as charmed by red. Spiders and insects like other bigger animals are endangered by uncontrolled deforestation and irresponsible attitude of our society.

Spiders are unique as the can spin web. The silk they spun are not the same as each has its own unique properties, strength, sticky, tensile, slippery etc. Studies done showed that the web strand is stronger than a high grade steel. Research is still been done to produce synthetic material that has similar properties as the spider's silk believed to be beneficial to mankind.

View all 12 photos...
I was invited to attend my cousin's wedding at Segambut last Saturday night. The akad nikah was 1 day earlier. It was the tradition of the bride's family or community to have a grand wedding something like 7 hari 7 malam but on the request from the boys side, it become 3 hari 2 malam.

We went on the second night which was majlis berinai with the marhaban members reciting versus from the Holy Book and kumpulan kompang singing arabic melodies with lyrices that included versus from the Quran. Later they had the pengantin on the pelamin observed only by the close family members.

I went there with Roza, Aliah, Maman, my mother inlaw, sister inlaw, Boogey, Salina and Lily. We joined Ngah and De's family(our cousins) at Masjid Wilayah before leaving for the house together.

KLIB 2007 Launching

View all 12 photos...
I was in Kl on 22-24 to attend a seminar on occupational health. On the second night in KL I took the monorail and then walk to KLCC to meet P5 not knowing that the launching of Kuala Lumpur International Batik would be on the same night. I just followed P5 who was invited to the VIP seating and took this opportunity to shot my first national event and fashion show.

KLIB 2007 was organised by Penyayang, a group who love and promote batik initiated by the late Datin Seri Endon. Petronas, ASTRO, STAR and Berjaya were among the many sponsors.

That night they had speeches, fashion show, firework display and later VVIP TT at MPC on level 42 Petronas Tower.

You have to bring your invitation to be in here. As for us, we were initially mistaken to be from the media and were taken to the reporters bay. We were later invited to take our seats at the VIP seating.

Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis(CST)

I was unwell 9 days prior to Eidil Fitri with severe headache which continued through my sleep in the form of dream. On the next day I requested for MRI but CT scan was done instead as it was been used on other scheduled patient. CT scan was negative of any significant findings.

As I had history of transphenoidal brain surgery recently and now having severe headache with nasal infection, they arranged me for late afternoon MRI. The diagnosis CST was made based on MRI findings and high TWBC count of more than 15K.

I was immediately started on i/v Rocephine 2g stat and 1g bid, Flagyl 500mg tid and Gentamycin 240mg dly. On top of that Iwas also given i/v Dexamethasone tid for 3 days and Zantac bid.

The headache disappeared by the next day without any analgesic. On the third day I started to experience the side effects of the antibiotics; nausea, giddiness and gastrointestinal discomforts. On the sixth day i had symptoms of hypopituitarism, the addisonian crisis. I started to pass urine every hour even at night, drowsy, lethargy, low pulse, nausea, abdominal discomfort, cold and heaviness of the head.

I was given i/v Hydrocortisone 200mg stat than 100mg bid. The symptoms improved a few hours later. I was discharged 2 days later with oral hydrocortisone, oral zinnat and zantac.

Alhamdulillah, I am recovering well with strong family support especially from my other significant half. I am grateful to God not only for giving me good recovery but getting me closer to Him, understanding myself better with the guide from a book written by Imam AlGhazali, The Alchemy of Happiness.

I am grateful to Allah for the support from my family, friends and the medical staff who help me to regain my health.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST) is usually a late complication of an infection of the central face or paranasal sinuses. Other causes include bacteremia, trauma, and infections of the ear or maxillary teeth. CST is generally a fulminant process with high rates of morbidity and mortality.

Prior to the advent of effective antimicrobial agents, the mortality rate from CST was effectively 100%.
Typically, death is due to sepsis or central nervous system (CNS) infection. With aggressive management, the mortality rate is now less than 30%.
Morbidity, however, remains high, and complete recovery is rare. Roughly one sixth of patients are left with some degree of visual impairment, and one half have cranial nerve deficits.

History: The early signs and symptoms of CST may not be specific. A patient who presents with headache and any cranial nerve findings should be potentially evaluated for CST.

* Patients generally have sinusitis or a midface infection eg pimples(squeezing of pimples).

* Headache is the most common presentation symptom and usually precedes fevers, periorbital edema, and cranial nerve signs.
The headache is usually sharp, increases progressively, and is usually localized to the regions innervated by the ophthalmic and maxillary branches of the fifth cranial nerve.

* As the infection tracts posteriorly, patients complain of orbital pain and fullness accompanied by periorbital edema and visual disturbances.

* Without effective therapy, signs appear in the contralateral eye by spreading through the communicating veins to the contralateral cavernous sinus. Eye swelling begins as a unilateral process and spreads to the other eye within 24-48 hours via the intercavernous sinuses. This is pathognomonic for CST.

* Patient rapidly develops mental status changes including confusion, drowsiness, and coma from CNS involvement and/or sepsis. Death follows shortly thereafter.
